Heat pump repair in Snyder, TX for systems that heat and cool

A heat pump works twice as many months as an air conditioner, switching between heating and cooling as the seasons change. That extra duty brings its own set of failures, and diagnosing them takes more than a cooling-only mindset.

What makes heat pump problems different

A heat pump moves heat rather than creating it. In summer it pulls heat out of your home and releases it outside, just like an air conditioner. In winter it reverses the flow, extracting heat from outdoor air, even cold air, and delivering it indoors. A component called the reversing valve switches the direction of refrigerant flow, and a defrost control periodically clears frost from the outdoor coil during heating season.

Those extra parts are where many heat pump repairs begin. A reversing valve that sticks partway can leave the system blowing lukewarm air in both modes. A failed defrost board or sensor can let the outdoor coil encase itself in ice until airflow stops entirely. Meanwhile the parts heat pumps share with air conditioners, including capacitors, contactors, fan motors and compressors, work through winter and summer alike, so they accumulate hours faster.

Heat pumps also behave in ways that look like problems but are normal. Steam rising from the outdoor unit in winter, a whooshing sound when the system switches into defrost, and supply air that feels cooler than a furnace would deliver are all expected. Part of every repair visit is sorting normal behavior from genuine faults, so you are not paying to fix something that is working as designed.

Many systems also include backup electric heat strips or a gas furnace that takes over in very cold weather. When a heat pump fails, that backup can keep the house warm while running up a large electric bill without anyone noticing. A sudden jump in winter electricity use is often the first clue that the heat pump itself has stopped doing its share.

Our heat pump diagnostic sequence

Heat pumps need testing in the mode that is failing, which is why we check both heating and cooling operation whenever weather allows.

  1. Thermostat and control review

We confirm the thermostat is configured for a heat pump, that its wiring energizes the reversing valve correctly, and that auxiliary heat settings are sensible.

  2. Electrical testing

Capacitors, contactors, fan motors and compressor windings are tested, along with the defrost board and its sensors.

  3. Refrigerant readings in both modes

Pressures and temperatures are measured to check charge and to confirm that the reversing valve fully shifts between heating and cooling.

  4. Defrost cycle verification

Where conditions allow, we force a defrost cycle and watch the fan stop, the valve shift and the coil clear, then return to heating.

  5. Repair, report and recheck

Once you approve the repair, we complete it and run the system through a full cycle, then leave written findings including any wear we spotted on other components.

Heat pump symptoms worth a service call

Some of these are urgent in winter. Others are early warnings that are easier and less costly to address now.

  • Outdoor coil solid with iceLight frost is normal, and the unit should clear it during defrost cycles. A thick block of ice that stays through the day points to a defrost control, sensor, fan or refrigerant problem.
  • Cold air in heating modeA heat pump delivers air cooler than a furnace, but air that feels genuinely cold during heating may mean a stuck reversing valve, low charge or a failed compressor.
  • Auxiliary heat running constantlyIf your thermostat shows auxiliary or emergency heat most of the time in moderate weather, the heat pump may not be carrying its share of the load.
  • Unit will not switch modesA system that heats but will not cool, or the reverse, usually has a reversing valve, solenoid coil or thermostat wiring problem.
  • Loud grinding or rattling outsideFan motor bearings, loose panels and debris in the fan all make noise, and bearing failures eventually stop the fan and overheat the coil.
  • Short cycling in either seasonRapid on and off operation can come from refrigerant issues, a faulty sensor or an oversized system, and it wears the compressor quickly.

Why heat pump repair costs vary so widely

Electrical parts such as capacitors, contactors and defrost sensors are relatively modest repairs. Fan motors cost more. Reversing valves require recovering the refrigerant, unbrazing and brazing the new valve in place, pulling a deep vacuum and recharging, which makes them one of the more labor-intensive repairs on a heat pump. Compressor replacement is the largest repair of all.

The refrigerant type, the age of the system and whether parts remain under manufacturer warranty all influence the final figure. On older systems, especially those that need a compressor or reversing valve, we lay out the repair cost next to the cost of replacement so you can decide with the full picture in front of you.

Heat pump iced up or blowing cold?

Switch to emergency heat if the house is getting cold, then call. A technician can diagnose the heat pump while backup heat keeps you comfortable.

Understanding balance point and backup heat

Every heat pump has a balance point, the outdoor temperature at which its heating output equals the heat your home is losing. Above that point, the heat pump handles everything on its own. Below it, backup heat makes up the difference. Modern cold-climate heat pumps have pushed that balance point much lower than older models, but backup heat still has a role in the coldest weather.

Problems arise when the thermostat calls for backup heat too early, or when the heat pump is too small for the house. The system still keeps you warm, but it leans on electric resistance heat that costs far more to run. Checking the thermostat's auxiliary heat lockout settings and the heat pump's actual output is a routine part of our winter diagnostics.

Keeping the outdoor unit clear through winter

Snow drifts, ice falling from rooflines and leaves packed against the coil all restrict airflow and make the heat pump work harder. Keep at least a couple of feet around the outdoor unit clear, and make sure it sits high enough on its stand or pad that melting frost can drain away rather than refreezing beneath the coil.

Never chip ice off the coil with a tool, since the aluminum fins and copper tubing are easily punctured. If ice persists beyond normal defrost cycles, switch to emergency heat and call. Seasonal maintenance, like the checks described on our Ac Tune Up page, catches weak parts before the demanding weeks of either season.

Heat pump repair questions

Why is steam coming from my heat pump in winter?

That is usually the defrost cycle. The outdoor coil warms briefly to melt frost, and the meltwater gives off vapor in cold air. It typically lasts a few minutes and is normal. Smoke with a burning smell is different and means you should shut the system off.

Is it normal for my heat pump to run all day in cold weather?

Yes, in very cold weather long run times are normal. Heat pumps are designed to run steadily at lower output rather than in short bursts. Constant running in mild weather, however, suggests a problem worth checking.

What does emergency heat mean on my thermostat?

Emergency heat turns off the heat pump and relies entirely on backup heat, usually electric strips. It is meant for use when the heat pump has failed. Running on emergency heat for long periods keeps you warm but uses much more electricity.

Can a reversing valve be repaired or does it need replacement?

Sometimes the solenoid coil that controls the valve has failed, and that is a simple electrical replacement. If the valve body itself is sticking or leaking internally, it needs to be replaced, which involves refrigerant recovery and brazing.

Do ductless mini-split heat pumps have the same problems?

Many of the same issues apply, including defrost faults, sensor failures and refrigerant leaks. Mini-splits also rely heavily on electronic boards and communication between indoor and outdoor units, so diagnosis often starts with reading error codes.
